Nobody Cares What I have to Say - A Discourse on Blogs
Ever since I started following Gary Vaynerchuk and read his book Crush It!, I have been pushing the significance of blogging to all of my friends and family. In his book, Gary discusses the shift in today’s business world. From newsprint and cocktail parties to blogs and twitter, new opportunities are arising every day for just about anybody who can work a keyboard and mouse. People are following their wildest dreams because the new age of internet is providing them with a means to do it!
Just imagine talking about your biggest passion, sharing all of your knowledge and meeting like minded people every day. You would be doing what you absolutely love to do and it would be your day job. This is exactly what the world of blogging offers!
The other day I asked my sister if she would be starting a blog anytime soon. She answered, “I’m a good writer but nobody cares what I have to say.” My first thought was, “who gives a shit?” But, thinking more reasonably, the second thought that came to my mind was, “You would be surprised!”
I’m no saint, cash is on my mind when I spend hours and hours slaving over my brand, Yourwiseguy.com. I love what I do but it would rock ten times more if there was some cash flow in the mix. If no one reads what you are putting out then there is no reason for you to believe that any company would want to pay you for advertising space. And adspace is where the money is at, right?
What you have to understand is that, as long as you are focused on what you know and love, and are being totally you, there is no reason to believe that people won’t want to hear what you have to say. Like I said, you would be utterly surprised at how many people might happen upon your blog and become full time members.
Let me give you an example to illustrate my point. Everyday I go to work and spend the majority of my time with a guy named Brian. Brian is a talker. He used to work as a used car salesman and, from what I hear, he was damn good at it. I know this because that is all he talks about. He tells me about the scams, the rebates, the funny stories, and all of the things that have to do with selling used cars.
Everyday he talks and talks and talks about being a used car salesman and I have never gotten bored of it. In fact, I find myself asking random questions that I would never think of myself to ask. I have absolutely no interest in the used car industry but, because he is so passionate and knowledgeable about it, he could hold my attention all day long!
The point is that people will love what you have to say because they will love you. Each and every person is unique and interesting in their own right and readers eat that up. If you are authentic and put out good content, you will have nothing to worry about.
Don’t get me wrong, you won’t gain a huge following over night. But it won’t matter because everytime you log into your blog you know you will be writing about something you love. It will be worth it, and when the viewers and opportunities to monetize start rolling in you will realize that you had been living the dream all along.
In the wise words of Gary Vaynerchuk, “Love your family. Work superhard. Live your passion.” Thanks for reading!
